Be Pretty On The Inside Too

I’m sure you’ve heard it a million times, but I will say it again…BEAUTY BEGINS IN THE BELLY!

A healthy gut is the key to radiant, beautiful skin and overall good health! Having an unhealthy gut is when major health and skin problems happen. This can be caused by overuse of medications, unhealthy diet, stress, lack of sleep, and hormones in your food and skincare. Inflammation in your gut results in inflammation in your skin which causes a decline in your collagen production and elasticity. Save yourself all that money you spend on numerous facial treatments and start investing in your guts.

Most of you know I now lead a plant based diet which has done wonders for my body, my health, and my skin. On top of the food I put into my body, I make sure to incorporate supplements into my diet as well. I introduced a liquid Collagen supplement from The Beauty Chef into my morning routine about 5 months ago and I have seen really great improvements in my skin. The Beauty Chef is a line of bio-fermented, wholefood nutrition with prebiotics and probiotics that help you achieve healthy, plump, glowing skin. The first time I had even heard of liquid collagen was from Kourtney Kardashian, but the kind she uses contained animal products. After a lot of research, I found this plant based line and it has been a perfect addition to my routine.

Here are the three products I now use regularly, and hopefully you can incorporate into your beauty routine too!

  • Collagen Beauty Boost: This product, at no surprise, helps to boost collagen production in your skin and replenish collagen we lose during the aging process. This product helps to balance your digestive tract and boost radiance in your skin. It has smoothed out bumps in my skin, dark spots from the sun have lightened, and I’ve heard from girlfriends who suffered with acne that this has helped minimize their breakouts. The skin on my forehead and around my eyes looks and feels smoother. This liquid collagen is literally like sipping your way to younger skin. I mix it into water or into my smoothies in the morning. It tastes delicious and goes best in my opinion with a berry smoothie.

  • Glow Advanced Inner Beauty powder : This product boosts collagen, improves gut health, and is magical for your hair, skin, and nails. This is great too if you need a hydration boost for your skin and maybe your skincare is not quite cutting it. This is like drinking an expensive moisturizer or serum, LOL, I swear, it’s that good. This product is a powder so you can mix this into your smoothies, sprinkle it on top of your food, and for extra benefits, I mix this with the liquid collagen.

  • Antioxidant Beauty Boost : I don’t take this product every day, but if I wake up feeling sluggish or like I am getting sick, I throw this into the mix as well. This product is also great if your skin is looking dull or if you’ve been traveling a lot and airplanes and weather change have wreaked havoc on that beautiful face.

The lesson here is that while your skincare routine is so crucial to healthy skin and youthful skin, it isn’t just about what we layer on top of the skin, but also what you are doing to your insides. The keys to healthy skin are SO EASY, yet so few of us actually do it! Drink more water, cut out processed foods, candy, meat, and dairy. You may look fine now, but years of unhealthy eating habits will eventually creep up on you. Switching to a plant based diet, supplements included has been life changing. Be real with yourself, where could you improve? How do you want to look and feel right now? 10 years from now? Be good to yourselves, it shows!

That one product you probably tried to avoid buying but actually really need...

I'm talking about PRIMERS! You wouldn't believe how many clients tell me their makeup doesn't last all day and then come to find out it's because they are missing such a crucial step! I know, with our busy schedules who has time to add ONE MORE freakin product to their morning beauty routine? WE ALL DO! It literally takes 2 seconds!

I'm going to tell you what primers do, how to apply, and which ones you should purchase ( they will be hyperlinked so you can add to your cart right away ).

First, WHAT IS A PRIMER? - Primers are products designed to create a nice even canvas before you paint your masterpiece ( that's how I like to look at it )

  • Primers combat shine
  • Create a smooth base for foundation application
  • Lengthen the wear of your makeup by giving your makeup something to hold on to so your skin isn't soaking up all your product
  • Smoothes fine lines, wrinkles, and large pores
  • Brightens the skin
  • Evens out skin tone...combats redness!
  • Gives the skin a radiant glow
  • Protects from environmental pollutants and damage
  • Reduces the appearance of acne

How to apply? Easy! - Apply AFTER moisturizer with your fingertips (just as you would apply moisturizer). If you have a little extra time, I like to do a mini facial massage to get my blood flowing...because, why not?

Now, on to my favorites! If you are a client of mine, you've definitely seen these in my kit!  I don't got to work without them!

1. Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow Primer : This primer gives the skin a radiant dewy look, so naturally if you know anything about my artistry style, this one is my favorite! I like to use this underneath my foundation and even on top for extra radiance. This can also be worn alone for those days you don't feel like wearing foundation to give the skin a more polished look and a subtle glow. This product also contains anti aging ingredients that stimulates collagen and boosts elasticity in the skin! $55

2. Hourglass Cosmetics Veil Mineral Primer : This is a great primer for normal to oily skin! I've even had clients text me after a day of wearing their makeup asking how I got it to stay so well! This is it! This primer does it all! It smoothes, conceals redness, is long lasting, and has SPF 15 to combat the sun's harmful rays! Leaves the skin with a nice silky finish! $54

3. Cover FX Mattifying Primer with Acne Treatment : This primer has an instant mattifying effect, while preventing and healing acne. This product helps to clarify the skin and reduce sebum buildup while minimizing pores, shine, inflammation, and redness. $38

4. NYX Studio Perfect Photo Loving Primer : This primer is available in three different formulas. The clear formula helps to soften fine lines and pores. The green one helps to correct redness in the skin, and the lavender helps to correct yellow tones. This product creates a smooth matte finish on the skin. $13

However you prefer to wear your makeup, primers make a huge difference in how well it stays put. Make sure the primer you purchase is tailored to what your skin needs. If you don't have large pores, you don't need a primer that is specific to minimizing large pores. If your skin is crying of thirst...don't slap a mattifying primer on top of it! Give your skin what it needs and I promise it will work for you! If you give any of these above a try, please let me know your feedback!

Thank you always for joining me! Have a great week!

Lauren's List of Beauty Faves - December

Hello fellow makeup and skincare junkies! I've decided at the beginning of each month to share with you all some of my favorite cruelty free and/or vegan beauty products I've either tried for the first time or started using again during the previous month. I get a lot of questions about my recommendations for beauty needs, so each month I will be delivering my faves to you right here, with links on where to purchase, deets on why I love it so much, and in depth info on each product! One tip I must share, that I do myself, especially with the travel sizes first if that is an option! This way you can try out the product and decide if you want to go through with purchasing the full size! The free sample sizes they give you at beauty counters unfortunately are typically not enough for you to see results.

Alright, let's get to it! ( this blog is a bit long, so sit back, grab a glass of red wine and enjoy )

P.S I have also BOLDED the product category so if you are really only interested in something particular, you can scroll right to it!

  1. EYE CREAM - Tarte Maracuja C-Brighter Eye Treatment : This eye cream is super creamy and hydrating without leaving my under eye area feeling greasy, so it is safe to use underneath makeup. So many rich eye creams cause concealer to crease and sometimes just wipe right off once you apply. The Maracuja oil is rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin C which delivers firmer, smoother, brighter skin. It is also packed with antioxidants which help fight the signs of aging! This eye cream is great if you have mild sagging or puffiness in the eye area. It also has light reflecting particles which diminishes the look of dark circles and helps you look like you actually had 8 hours of sleep ( which we all know is impossible lol ).  Priced at $38 this is affordable and effective. Tarte cosmetics is a cruelty free and vegan skincare line, free of toxins!

  2. LIP TREATMENT - Herbivore Botanicals Coco Rose Lip Conditioner: If you know me, you know I love anything that smells like roses. This product is made with both virigin coconut oil and moroccan rose which leaves a soft light floral scent with a touch of coconut. It tastes pretty delish too :) This product is super hydrating and nourishing and made with all natural ingredients. The only thing I wish was different about this product is that it also came in a stick or was a little easier to get out of the jar. I usually scrape with a Q-tip and then apply. Herbivore Botanicals offer products that are safe, non-toxic, and never tested on animals. Priced at $22
  3. BRONZER - Hourglass Cosmetics Ambient Lighting Bronzer : This is seriously my new favorite bronzer. It is very rare to find a bronzer that gives you a natural sunkissed glow. A lot of bronzers are either flat and muddy or way too shimmery and orange that it's sooo obvious that glow is not real.  It blends really beautifully and you need only a soft swipe of your brush to deliver a nice glow. Be careful picking up too much of this bronzer though, a little goes a long way! This product is Gluten free, talc free, fragrance free, never tested on animals and certified vegan!  Priced at $50
  4. LIP LINER - Chantecaille Lip Definer in "Tone" : I love this lip liner because it is long lasting and the color is about 1-2 shades darker than my natural lip color so I usually just line my lips and fill in my lips with just this for an every day natural look. It also pairs well with most nudes and even some deeper hues. This liner is smudgeproof and water resistant! Priced at $26
  5. CONCEALER - Chantecaille Le Camouflage Stylo : I have pretty dark circles and it seems that most under eye concealers that combat dark circles are super thick and cakey. I love this product for everyday use because it's lightweight, you need just a few strokes from the brush, and it creates a bright refreshed look under the eye. For special occassions or photography I would probably not use this, but for everyday...I'm sold for life. Chantecaille skincare is cruelty free and also free of sulfates, detergents, mineral oil, synthetic colors and fragrances. Priced at $52. A little on the expensive side for concealer, but in this case, you get what you pay for!
  6. EYELASH TREATMENT - Rodan and Fields Lash Boost : I have always been a skeptic of this line, as I am sure many of you are. Although the skincare did not work for me ( I know it works wonders for some people ), the Lash Boost is the real deal! I used to wear false eye lashes every weekend, ripping them off before bed and never really understood the importance of taking good care of your lashes until I saw how expensive it was to get lash extensions and the maintenance that came with that.  So, with me refusing to get lash extensions...which btw break off your lashes into little nubs over time, I decided to see what the hype was all about with Lash Boost. Game changer! My lashes are longer, fuller, even shinier than ever before. People are always asking me if I wear fake lashes! I will never stop using this product! Whoever that Rodan and Fields lady may be that is always calling or messaging you, call her back now and order the Lash Boost! I'm not sure on price right now...I think they are running some specials for Christmas! I have a few girlfriends who sell R&F, I can hook you up with their contact info if you'd like!
  7. LONGWEAR LIP STICK - Lawless Beauty Liquid Lipstick : The one pictured is "George" however, I loved this lipstick so much when they ran a special for Black Friday I bought the entire collection LOL! This lipstick is long wearing, amazing pigment, does not dry my lips out, and the best part, it is 100% non toxic! Priced at $25
  8. HOLIDAY EYESHADOW - Stila Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow : I love this product for special occasions!! It glides on smooth and effortlessly, is super lightweight on the lid, but sparkles so beautifully! A lot of other glitter eye shadows I've used leave my lids feeling wet, sticky, and even creases. This product dries pretty I will with it quickly. These are the perfect addition to your makeup kit and are perfect for all of your upcoming holiday parties! Priced at $24
  9. EYE LINER - Pretty Vulgar Eyeliner : First off, I'm such a sucker for unique packaging. I will buy something just because it looks cute, and then I am usually sadly disappointed in the product itself. Not the case here. This product is JET BLACK, the pigment in it is perfect! It glides on effortlessly, no tugging, no need to go back over the line to make it darker, no smudging, no transfers to your lids once you open your eyes! It's kind of perfect! If you love a sharp black winged liner, you need to try this product! Priced at $24 and if it's your first time shopping from their website, you get 20% off your order! :) Add to!
  10. FACE MIST - Herbivore Botanicals Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist : This mist has 5 ingredients that are so good for you! Coconut water which hydrates and gives you that healthy glow - Hibiscus Flower which aids in cell turnover helping us to have a more even skin tone - Rose, my favorite, which is hydrating and high in antioxidants and helps reduce redness in the skin - Witch Hazel which also helps with redness and inflammation and tightens the skin - and last, Aloe Vera which is healing, hydrating, and helps prevent breakouts and blemishes. I spray this on my face all day every day. With this winter weather drying out our faces, it's super important to keep this in your purse and give yourself a spritz anytime you need a refresher. It also smells amazzzzzing!! Order the bigger me, you will use through it fast. Priced at $32
  11. FOUNDATION - I tried to keep my list at 10, BUT, I had to add one more in, especially for all my ladies who always ask about foundation recommendations!  As a makeup artist, Fenty Beauty Pro FILT'R Foundation has become a favorite for me! When my skin is on the drier side, I don't always love this. I definitely recommend this for any of you ladies who have combo skin or oily skin. This is a soft matte formula, which I love. Not every skin type can handle a dewy luminous look but that doesn't mean they need a full matte foundation plastered on their face. This foundation is perfect for my ladies who need more of a matte look but their skin can still look like skin! This product truly is long wear and I love using it for a night out or special occasions! Fenty beauty is cruelty free, and from the research I have done so far, the foundation is actually a vegan formula. Don't hold me to that, I am still doing more research to make sure that is 100% confirmed. Priced at $34

That wraps up my list of favorites, if you read all the way through, thank you for sticking with me! I am quite the talker! :)

I hope you love these products as much as I do and if you do purchase, please let me know what you think!!

How to Master Every Date Night and Look Gorgeous AF

Whether it's the first date or the 100th date, I always think it's worth putting some effort into looking good and feeling sexy for a night out with your guy. I know with our busy schedules it sometimes feels impossible to slow down and squeeze in a romantic night out, but I think nights like this should be mandatory. We shouldn't take them for granted and we should always find time to celebrate time with our men, regardless of what you do for "date night".

I'm going to share with you my tips for going confidently into your evening out. These 5 tips may seem like no brainers, but they are guaranteed to have you feeling cool, calm, collected, and gorgeous AF!

  1. RELAX- If this is your early into your relationship, you may be feeling butterflies or your nerves getting the best of you. If you are well into your relationship, you may feel like rushing through getting ready and even your date, because this is just 1 of 50 other things on your to do list today. Whichever scenario you may find yourself in, just relax. Let's slow down and enjoy these moments. I always like to turn on music that is soothing and sexy. My go to is SADE. Her voice makes you feel like a goddess! I also like to light some candles, I prefer scents that are a mixture of feminine and masculine. I love Cinderose by Boy Smells. Pour yourself a glass of wine, and enjoy this YOU time while you get ready for US time. Disclaimer: Please only drink one glass, we want you to remember your name by the start of dinner. :)

2. Exfoliate and De Fuzz - I don't think I need to elaborate here, but I will share some of my favorite products! My favorite exfoliant for the body is Coco Rose by Herbivore. It is a coconut oil body polish that leaves your skin feeling silky with just a subtle scent of roses and coconuts. So soft and feminine. For my face I like to exfoliate with Tatcha Polished Rice Enzyme Powder. This product leaves my face feeling soft. This is not an abrasive exfoliant that leaves redness on the face or your skin looking irritated.  Let's also not forget about our lips! My two favorite lip scrubs are Sara Happ's Red Velvet lip scrub, or French Girl Cosmetics Rose Lip Polish

3. Hydrated Skin and Dewy Makeup - This naturally, is my favorite part. If it is not Halloween and you aren't stepping into a war zone, leave the clown makeup and war paint for a different occasion. Ladies, we way too often OVERDO this part. Spending too much time in front of the mirror is dangerous. Mirrors should legit come with that warning label. Anyways... Your skin should be dewy and fresh. Men HATE dry cakey skin. If you have time, do a quick hydrating face mask and remove with a warm damp towel to open up your pores before starting your makeup. My favorite mask for this is Hibiscus Smoothing Mask by Chantecaille. It leaves your skin feeling fresh, brighter, and radiant! For your makeup, I recommend opting for a weightless foundation, so your skin looks like skin, not foundation. My two favorites are Becca Aqua Luminous or Hourglass Cosmetics Veil Oil Free Foundation. Keep your blush soft. Stay away from bright pinks, your want your cheeks to look naturally flushed, like he just made you blush ;). Keep your eyebrows soft as well. Brows should always be soft and feminine. That "instagram brow" is not even cute on instagram, so please don't bring it into the real world either. If you are blonde, your eyebrows should be 1-2 shades darker than your hair. Just a little rule of thumb! Find balance with your look. Sex up your eyes with soft smokey shades and keep your lips glossy and nude ( avoid matte lips for dates and kissing, they tend to dry out your lips, making them look chapped and cracky ).  If you opt for a red lip, keep the eyes neutral. Statistics actually prove that red lips increase attractiveness and make you feel more confident. For more on finding tips on how to rock nude lipstick or red lipstick, refer to my past blog posts!

4. Effortless Hair - This isn't a beauty pageant where that rule, "The higher the hair the closer to God" applies. In fact, I think that rule is a bit outdated, period. A slightly tousled look is usually the most attractive. You look beautiful, effortlessly. You want him to also be able to run his fingers through your hair without running into knots where you teased a little too much at the root, or his fingers leave your hair with gunk all over from the overuse of products. My two favorite products to achieve that slightly messy look are Kevin Murphy Doo.Over and Eleven Australia Sea Salt Texture Spray. You may have to check with your local salons to see who carries these. If you live in Charlotte, NC , check out Heirloom Salon!  Apply these to your hair after curling with a wand, and you've got sexy beach waves no matter where you live!

5. Dress to impress without the stress - If this is a first date, I know we go crazy about WTF to wear. We send photos to our group chats to take votes, we destroy our closet until our bedroom looks like a tornado and now you can't find your damn dog anywhere! Happens to the best of us. Woooosah ladies! My go to outfit is something you definitely already have in your closet, men love it, and it probably didn't even cross your mind as you laid out all of these ridiculous over the top trendy options over your bed. High waisted ripped skinny jeans, a black body suit, and sexy stilettos. BAM! Sexy, confident, casual, and classy all in one. In the event you are anything like me, which is notorious for ripping things on my way to anything important...have a plan B outfit just in case. We want to avoid any mental breakdowns on a night like this. Also, dress for the occasion. Stilettos and laser tag generally don't mesh.

Now, get out there and enjoy yourself! If you have enough time beforehand, I am also available for spray tans and makeup appointments :) -- Please tab over to my menu of services for more info!

How to Rock A Red Lip

The color RED is passion, confidence, strength, stimulation, excitement, power. Red is glamorous, sexy, feminine, classic, timeless, chic. Anyone will tell you, red lips are the equivalent to the little black dress. It takes a confidant woman to rock a fierce red lipstick, however, it must be done right!

I have so many girlfriends and clients who shy away from red lipstick and you have no idea how excited I get when one agrees to let me try one on them! Every time I have, they love the way they look! A good red lip just does something to a woman's mood. Below I am sharing with you the "How To's" for rockin a red lip as well as a few of my favorites. I have also linked them for you so you can shop after you read :)

  • First you must figure out whether you have cool toned skin or warm. To quickly and easily find this out look at the inside of your wrist. If your veins are more blue you likely have cool undertones. If your veins are more green, you likely have warm undertones. If your veins are a mix of blue and green, then you are a mix of both and can truly get away with wearing any shades of lipstick!
  • If you have blue undertones, find red lipsticks with blue or purple shaded undertones. If you are warm, reds with brown or orange shaded undertones.
  • If you are new to red lipstick and are a little scared of taking the jump, take baby steps! Take your favorite nude or soft pink lipstick and add just a touch of the red lipstick, adding a little more each time you wear it until you feel comfortable rocking a true red hue.
  • Keep your lips exfoliated, flake free, and hydrated. Wearing a bold color draws attention to your mouth immediately and there is nothing less sexy than dry, cracked, chapped lips. Keeping your pout hydrated throughout the day will also make your color last longer!
  • Look appropriate! If you are going to be outdoors during the day, pick a softer more sheer shade. If you will be indoors or it is an evening event, go for the BOLD!
  • Choose your outfit accordingly. Red lipstick pairs the best with all black and can be worn with a dressy outfit or even jeans, a white T, and a (faux) leather jacket. Your outfit can be totally casual and a pop of red on your lips takes it to a whole new level. Reds also pair nicely with reds ( see my photo ) or even with animal print. Be careful with the animal print though, if not done correctly you can look cray real quick. DON'T ever....wear pink and red together. You'll look like a walking advertisement for Valentine's Day and it's just an all around NO in my book.
  • Maintain your dental hygiene. This should go without saying for your entire life lol, but just FYI, red lipstick does not pair well with yellow stained teeth. There is nothing more eye catching than a beautiful bright smile :) BRUSH YOUR TEETH!!
  • Before applying lipstick, line the entire lip to help the color last longer. Lip liner also helps if you have fine or deep lines around the mouth. It prevents your lipstick from feathering.
  • To keep your lips looking clean and defined, I clean around my lips with a concealer brush and a tiny bit of concealer. This will help if you accidentally draw outside of your lip lines. If you know you don't have a steady hand, purchase a lip brush and apply your lipstick with that instead of straight from the tube.
  • If it is possible you will be having a makeout sesh at some point in your night, opt for a a lip stain. Men prefer the lipstick on you, not on them, most likely ;)
  • Now, let's discuss the rest of your face when rockin a red lip.
    • If you are more of a natural makeup type of gal, it is very important to keep your eyes super neutral. A little mascara and a soft beige or brown eyeshadow will go perfectly. If you do too much you will shock yourself!
    • Don't wear a rosy red blush, opt for something very soft, or nothing at all.
    • If you are going for a very dewy, luminous, highlighted look on your skin, opt for a matte lipstick for balance. You don't want your entire face to be overly shiny!
    • If you want a classic, Marilyn Monroe look, pair a bright red lipstick with a clean black winged liner on the top lid. No bottom liner, some mascara, and skip the blush.
    • If you like your makeup bold, go ahead and pair your red lip with a smoky eye. Keep the rest of your face as neutral as possible and opt for bronze colors, deep golds and browns for the eye. I wouldn't recommend creating a smoky eye with blacks, purples, greys...etc. Subtle smoky eyes pair best with deep shades of red. I would also recommend a matte lipstick for this look.

On to my favorites :)

I hope you all enjoyed this read and are ready to rock your red pout. The best thing about makeup is being able to change your look to suit your mood or to even uplift your mood. Red is the perfect color to make a statement and make you feel beautiful and sexy! As always, no matter what color you choose to wear, wear it with confidence and have fun doing it! Don't forget to subscribe to my blog so you never miss a post! Have a great weekend everyone! xoxo

P.S. As always, all of the recommendations I make are not tested on animals and are certified cruelty free. It is very possible to look beautiful and buy inexpensive makeup as well as luxury makeup without harming beautiful animals. Do your research or if all else fails...ASK ME :)

Organic Oil Obsessed

When I was in college, my mom, who I owe my skincare obsession to, handed me a bottle of Josie Maran Argan Oil and said "put 3-4 drops of this on your face before bed every night and you'll look young forever!!" I looked at her like she was crazy. Why the hell would I put oil on my face? Sure, I want to look young for as long as possible, but I wasn't really into looking like a greasy pimply teenager. After finally giving in, I tried it, loved it, and I am pleased to tell you I never broke out and while many women my age are already testing out Botox, I've been lucky enough to not need it...yet! THANKS MOM!!! Since then I've used probably any kind of oil, lotion, and fancy cream you can think of. Oils still win as my favorite form of hydration and after finally researching and learning what I've been putting on my face all of these years, the good and the ugly, I am here to share why you too should consider using oils! Yes, even you ladies with oily blemish prone skin!!

First, let's talk about creams.

  •  Creams are mostly wax and water with very few oils. Creams work initially, however the wax build up eventually clogs your pores and the wax barricade prevents the few oils the product does contain from penetrating into your skin, hence preventing the delivery of important nutrients. That is why, after time, our creams stop working.
  • A lot of manufacturers have to add all kinds of fillers and emulsifiers to create a creamy lotion. In fact, most creams contain synthetic chemicals and petroleum by products which have been linked to all sorts of health concerns. Take your time and research exactly what kind of health concerns these toxins can lead to! A lot of creams also contain glycerin which is made from animal fat...and we put that on our face. GROSS

Now, not ALL creams are bad. They do have beneficial ingredients that penetrate deep into the skin such as Aloe Vera, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, and Shea butter, just to name a few. Always look for creams that are certified organic, vegan, and cruelty-free. Stay away from any creams with synthetic fragrances (sometimes listed as "Parfum"), or opt for unscented or naturally scented. I actually use a cream as my day time moisturizer if I plan to wear makeup that day. I use Creme Fraiche by French Girl Organics

Now, let's talk about OILS!

  • The good oils come from plants, seeds, or fruits, and are packed with antioxidants without exposure to chemicals and toxins.
  • Oils deliver healthier, youthful looking skin. How? Well, youthful skin is held together by an abundance of oils. As we age, we produce less of these oils that contribute to giving us that healthy glow, soooo, we have to add them back! Oils are absorbed directly into the top of the skin where they instantly improve the lipid barrier function. A healthy lipid barrier prevents dehydrating by helping skin retain moisture!
  • Oils work amazing on all parts of the body and absorb very easily. You can get multiple uses out of one little bottle! I usually sleep with oil in my hair too or I will oil up my hair and wear it all day in a bun.
  • Most oils have low potential to clog your pores since they are easily absorbed, not greasy, and non-comedogenic.
  • FOR MY OILY SKIN LADIES: Oils are rich in fatty acids. Fatty acids reduce breakouts by stabilizing the lipid barrier. Stabilizing the lipid barrier kills any bacteria or fungus on the skin's surface. Lipids dissolve lipids, and because of this, oils actually break up congestion at the source. Did I lose you there? Because I think I lost myself too! Jk, No but seriously...OILS ARE NOT BAD FOR YOU! THEY HELP YOU! However, please be cautious of how often you apply. If you are oily, you should only apply once a day (I recommend at night). You should also consider the ingredients in the oil, educate yourself on what each ingredient offers, and make sure they are right for you.

Just like not all creams are bad, not all oils are good! ALWAYS avoid MINERAL OILS! Mineral oils are a processed petroleum product. Mineral oil may be contaminated with toxins, it definitely clogs pores, and it has nothing beneficial to offer your skin.  AKA...just stay out of the Bath & Body works store!

I've noticed that women in general have this misconception that our skincare and makeup require long lists of ingredients ( usually words we can't pronounce ) and fancy packaging, and can't possibly make us look younger if the jar costs less than $250. In reality, an inexpensive jar of coconut oil or almond oil works just as well if not better and you will not go broke in your local department store!

Besides oils I can buy in the grocery store, here are some brands I love that you should love too ( brands are linked ):  KINDri, Kopari, French Girl Organics, Josie Maran, Sunday Riley, Goop, Maya Chia, and Herbivore Botanicals

As always, I hope my posts are informative and educational for you! Whatever products you choose to use in your routine, please always make sure they are non toxic, organic, and not tested on animals in any stage of development! If a product has burned holes into a baby pig, I personally do not want that on my face...agreed??

How to Look Good in the NUDE

We are talking lipsticks here! Finding the perfect nude lipstick can be a real pain! It's a constant struggle of going too dark and your lips looking muddy or too light and you look like one of the zombies from The Walking Dead. That milky white lipstick look is no bueno!

As a professional make up artist, I get to work with women of all different ethnicities and skin tones. Finding the perfect lip color for myself can be difficult enough, but finding one for every one of my clients has definitely been more challenging. After some research and a lot of trial and error, I am here to share which shades of nudes I have found work best for your skin tone as well as my favorite suggestions, which are all CRUELTY FREE :)

ALABASTER SKIN:  Opt for a soft, dusty pink. I suggest Stila Color Balm Lipstick in "Olivia"

FAIR SKIN: Opt for a rosy-beige. Hydrating or glossy formulas tend to look best with this skin tone. I suggest Jouer Hydrating Lipstick in "Meg".

LIGHT WITH SLIGHTLY OLIVE UNDERTONE: Opt for a warmer nude. I suggest Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G lipstick in "Nude Kate"

OLIVE WITH WARM OR COOL UNDERTONE: Choose a shade slightly darker than your skin. Opt for a more caramel beige if you are warm and a more pink beige if you are cool. I also think glosses are more flattering than mattes for this skin tone. My suggestions are from my all time favorite, Kylie Cosmetics. "Literally" gloss for the warmer tones, and "Damn Gina" gloss for cooler tones.

MEDIUM SKIN: I prefer a pink or peach that is lighter than your skin tone. My suggestions are from Urban Decay, Vice Lipstick in either "1993", "Stark Naked", or "Uptight".

CARAMEL SKIN: Opt for a golden peach nude, my suggestion is Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylo in "Nude No. 5"

MOCHA SKIN: Opt for a rosy or pink mauve and top it off with a sheer gold shimmer gloss. My combo suggestion is NYX Lip Lingerie in "Embellishment" topped with Cargo Cosmetics Essential Lip Gloss in "Sahara".

DARK SKIN: Opt for a shade slightly lighter than your skin tone. I suggest Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G in "Stoned Rose"

I hope this was helpful for you ladies! I know shopping online for colors doesn't always work so if you are weary of doing that, I suggest trying your colors on in store. After about three different swatches your natural lip color will change so try to narrow your options down to three!

Why You Should Get Cozy with a Nighttime Skincare Routine

Sleeping Beauty? Think again!

Why you should get cozy with a nighttime skincare routine

Every single one of us is guilty! You’ve been out having some cocktails, you get home late, the last thing you want to do is wash your face. Or, maybe you are spending the night with that new guy in your life and you either don’t have access to your skin care or you think leaving it on will make you look better waking up in the morning. I mean, this one time won’t hurt, right? Wrong!

So, let’s take a deeper look into what is happening to our skin as we are snoozing away.

  1. Breakouts - let’s address the obvious one first. Not only does sleeping in your makeup clog your pores, it can even stretch the pores making them larger!  Clogged pores lead to bacteria build up, breakouts and acne.  Gross
  2. Dry Skin - Makeup residue inhibits the absorption of our skincare products by creating a barrier that prevents beneficial ingredients from penetrating into the skin. This means that moisturizer you spent your whole paycheck on isn’t able to help you. Help the moisturizer help you!
  3. Wrinkles - Every woman’s worst enemy! Dirt and makeup trapped in your skin causes oxidative stress. If we don’t give our skin a chance to breathe and recover, this can lead to premature aging! I actually read an article about a woman who went 30 days without washing her face at night ( a brave, brave soul ) , and she literally aged herself by 10 years.
  4. Sad eyes - Sleeping with eye makeup on can lead to dryness, redness, irritation, and infection. Double those chances if you wear contacts! ( If you can’t wash your eyes, it’s safe to say you probably aren’t taking your contacts out either! Don’t worry, I’ve been guilty too! )  Sleeping in mascara or thick eyeliner can clog the tiny hair follicles and oil glands in our eyes lids which can form tiny bumps and styes. Not letting our lashes breathe at night also causes them to become brittle, break easily, and shed faster.  Just typing this made my eyes itch. Keep your lashes clean and hydrated! I recommend coconut oil or Rodan & Fields Lash Boost
  5. Not so Kissable lips - That long wear matte lipstick was perfect for your night out … but not washing that off at night makes for dry, cracked, chapped lips in the morning. Keep that pucker hydrated with a balm instead!

Now that I have horrified you, let me offer some helpful tips!

Keep your nighttime routine simple and focus on the fundamentals! Cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing! Keep it even more simple by using an exfoliating cleanser. I have linked some recommendations below:

Kate Somerville Exfolikate Cleanser - Philosophy Microdelivery Face Wash - Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser

  Other helpful tips:

  1. Wipes - Although these seem so convenient, there is more to using these than we know! I only recommend this as a last resort. First, know the difference between makeup remover wipes and cleansing wipes! Makeup remover wipes only remove makeup, they do not clean the skin. Think about how often we press, tug, and rub these on our eyes to get our mascara off. Doing this can cause sagging around the eyes. Cleansing wipes on the other hand, don’t clean effectively. In fact, they may just be pushing dirt and oil around your face. Again, use these as a LAST RESORT! I recommend Klorane Make-up Remover Wipes
  2. If you do pass out with your makeup on, POWER WASH THAT BABY the next morning! Gently of course :)  I recommend doing a double cleanse and using an oil based cleanser to emulsify dirt and oil. I recommend Tatcha Camellia Cleansing Oil
  3. Lastly, again if you do pass out with your makeup on, WASH YOUR PILLOWS AND SHEETS the next morning. Do not lay back down on that pillow with a clean face the very next night. You risk reverse contamination!

Now, let’s all vow to never fall asleep with our makeup on again!!

I hope this was informative for you guys! Please let me know if you have any questions or if you want to share any horror stories from sleeping with your make up!
